The Woodland Sensory Garden
Henshaws Arts & Crafts Centre

Henshaws occupies a large site in the middle of Knaresborough. Art makers with a range of disabilities are able to get involved in craft workshops and music events. The centre is open to the public and there are many community events through the year.

Yorkshire Garden Designs is currently working on the redevelopment of the woodland garden on site, formerly Knaresborough Zoo. The aim is to create a peaceful, magical place to relax and explore with an emphasis on sounds and textures.

So far we have planted a Rhododendron walk, installed a naturalistic  waterfall and stream (built by Aquascapes & Landscaping) and reconstructed the River Wall from our Eden show garden (built by stone mason Johnny Clasper.)

Watch this space for further developments!

Southlands Nursing Home

This was an exciting design project for Bupa Southlands Nursing Home in Harrogate. The home has a large garden which sadly wasn't being used to it's full potential because it was not suitably accessible for many of the residents.

The garden now has 3 sandstone paved patio areas linked with resin bound gravel paths to create a pleasant circuit to walk around, with plenty of places to sit and rest en route. A retaining wall alongside a path and hand rail splits the large lawn into two safe and usable levels.

The aim was to create a garden which would encourage residents to venture outdoors more, improving health and quality of life. The garden has been received enthusiastically by residents, staff and visitors and we wish them many happy years in it.

The Orchid Restaurant

This is the outdoor reception area of The Orchid Restaurant in Harrogate. It is designed to be an attractive and inviting entrance as well as an al fresco dining room.

The design reflects the modern, minimalist restaurant interior whilst blending in with the traditional Grade II listed exterior and complying with strict planning regulations in the upmarket centre of Harrogate.

Phormiums and grasses are planted in a uniform line through striking Polar White cobbles. These require next to no maintenance and look stunning all year round.

Sensory Garden at
Nidderdale Children's Resource Centre

'George's Garden' was transferred to Nidderdale Children's Resource Centre after it's gold award winning success at Harrogate Spring Flower Show. Here it will be enjoyed by children with disabilities and complex health needs from the Harrogate district for many years to come including the designer's son George. It won a Silver Gilt award from Yorkshire in Bloom and was a finalist in the North Yorkshire County Council Innovation Awards 2016

It is designed to encourage interaction, learning, physical excercise and an enjoyment of the outside world in a safe and accessible environment. There are elements to stimulate all the senses; sight (colourful flowers), touch (textured foliage), taste (fruit, veg and herbs), smell (scented foliage and flowers) and sound (swishy foliage and wind chimes).
